UH-OH, THAT'S NOT RIGHT

Happy Sunday All,

I am so glad that I am pass the debate with my friend over the use of the word, "God" v. "Higher Power" in my book, "Cooling Well Water: A Collection of Work By An African-American Woman."

My decision was to speak of my God, my Creator and Higher Power. I chose all three to clearly state that the God I refer to thereafter is the one I believe created the universe and me. The matter is now closed and I have total peace.

So as I move around in my daily walk, I certainly have my share of bumps along the way. I was chatting with somebody about my soon-to-be-released book when something rather frightening happened.

She said, "If people just pray, there would be no suicide." I responded with when people are clinically depressed and have thoughts of suicide, they cannot reason clearly enough to simply pray their way out of blackness. I said they need professional help.

We went around the barn and it became abundantly clear that the individual probably needed a mental health course to be able to offer spiritual counseling to a person with a brain disorder or chronic illness. I certainly don't know everything and I am not a religious leader.

So, I wondered; how do you slip that piece of advice to someone who knows the bible inside out?
